The drum in your Canon business copier, which is a part that works hand-in-hand with the toner cartridge, is susceptible to dust and dirt. A dirty drum transfers debris onto paper, resulting in dirty copies and documents containing missing words and graphics. Your Canon copier may also imprint streaks of toner around the edges of copies. When cleaning your Canon copier’s drum, do not use a liquid cleaning solution, water or an abrasive towel to remove the debris. These substances not only damage the drum but also your copier.

1.

Turn off and unplug your Canon copier. Put on a pair of latex or work gloves to keep toner and debris off of your hands. Cover a table, desk or other surface with three to four sheets of newspaper to protect the surface from spilled toner.

2.

Open your copier’s toner cartridge door on the front or top of the device and remove the toner cartridge. The cartridge contains the drum as part of its unit. Lay a flannel cloth onto the newspaper-covered table, desk or other surface and then shake the toner cartridge gently above the cloth to coat the cloth lightly with toner.

3.

Place the cartridge upside down on the newspaper-covered surface and open the drum’s shutter door, which contains hinges. Rotate the drum using the spindle on the side and wipe the drum’s surface with the toner-covered flannel cloth to remove any dust, dirt and caked-on debris. The drum only rotates in one direction. Work quickly so as not to expose the drum to light. Artificial and natural light can damage the drum’s surface.

4.

Continue rotating and wiping the drum’s surface until it is free of any debris and dirt. Close the drum’s shutter door and reinstall the cartridge back in your Canon copier.

Things Needed

  • Latex or work gloves
  • Newspaper
  • Flannel cloth

Tip

  • If possible, clean your Canon copier’s drum in a room with very little light. If the drum is exposed to intense light, place the drum in a dark room for five minutes before reinstalling it in your copier.
