Does anyone have a solution to get Canon RAW files (.cr2), or really RAW (and DNG) files in general to show up with thumbnails in Explorer in Windows 10? Canon doesn't have a codec download for Win10, and there's no Microsoft Camera Codec Pack post-Windows 8.1, which won't install on 10.
Speaking of RAW files, I now have a camera that's no longer supported by the version of Adobe Camera Raw I have with my CS6 install. For the moment I'm using Adobe's Raw to DNG(*) converter and then importing the DNG files into Photoshop with Camera Raw. So now I'm contemplating getting Lightroom and/or Creative Cloud. I think I can get a CC work-at-home license for cheap at work, something like $10 per year.
Is anyone else using a DNG workflow? Any particular advantages or disadvantages to the format? Other than the extra time/disk space that gets used up with the extra conversion.
(*) .dng files which also do not get thumbnails in Windows 10 without a codec that I also can't find. At least Adobe Bridge sees them.
Trouble with Canon CR2 RAW files. Worst case scenario is not to go back to Windows 8.1. Is there a RAW codec or similar software from Canon you need to. Jul 09, 2014 Canon supplies a codec however it is not for Windows 8.1 64 bit. Either they haven't got to it yet or they figure there is no need since Microsoft has dealt with it already. I have a new machine that I assembled. I installed Windows 8.0 64 bit and upgraded to 8.1 The machine is pretty ordinary. Sep 24, 2013 Installing the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack enables the viewing of a variety of device-specific file formats and will allow supported RAW camera files to be viewable in applications in Windows. For a complete listing of supported cameras, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base Article for more information.
I am using a Canon 5d mark iii camera. It is several years newer then my Adobe software. Adobe has stopped issuing updates for their older software to force users to sign up for a monthly subscription to their new software. My intent is to continue using the software as long as I can. Their subscription costs $70 a month, far more then I spent on previous versions of the software. I can work around that by using their free converter to DNG. However file explorer does not allow me to view DNG files or CR2 files (my camera raw files). Being able to view the thumbnails in file explorer is not essential however it is helpful.

It seems silly to have to buy third party software because Microsoft's update won't install and won't tell why.
